Embryonic Stem Cell Research: Good or Bad?

Stem cells are unique in that they have the potential to develop into a diverse range of different cells. Stem cells are seen by many researchers as having virtually unlimited application in the treatment and cure of many human diseases and disorders including Alzheimer's, diabetes, cancer, strokes, etc

The main controversy in the use of embryonic stem cells for medical research is in the harvesting of embryonic stem cells. Most opponents to the use of embryonic stem cells assume that the embryo is human ‘life’. And because most people believe that murder is immoral, someone who goes against the use of stem cells can argue that since murder is immoral, the same reasoning must be applied to the embryo because it too is a ‘life’. Other opponents to the use of embryonic stem cells state that there are better alternatives to their use. For example, umbilical cord blood has been used in a similar way with promising results.
